Hurricane forming over Singapore, around the East Coast area
Singapore May 25th, 2007Hurricane forming over Singapore, around the East Coast area. Looking out of my office window, my colleagues and myself saw a something forming in the sky. It was in a hurricane like shape, it was moving and forming into a funnel shape (See photo). We were thinking, hey this is Singapore, this shouldn’t be happening. Also what is this should we evacuate? is it dangerous? Than shortly after it appeared, the shape just vanished into think air as it quickly came.
Now this is really really weird, is there any geographical explanation for this? I am not sure, but one thing, could this be due to global warming? I don’t have concrete evidence but I bet you it is….
Update: It’s not a hurricane, its just a water spout and apparently it happened before so nothing to worry. But still it looks pretty freaky as it resembles something out from a Hollywood disaster movie. So what is a waterspout, according to Wikipedia - “A water spout is an intense columnar vortex (usually appearing as a funnel-shaped cloud) that occurs over a body of water and is connected to a cumuliform cloud. In the common form, it is a nonsupercell tornado over water, and brings the water upward. Also, it is weaker than most of its land counterparts”Thanks for the comments Nicole, ChillyCraps, Endoh and Kenny. I uploaded some other pictures that I have.

seen this a few times in Singapore. There is a explanation for this phoenomena, and don’t worry, it can never be a hurricane
If I am not mistaken, its caused by rapid air movements, and usually dissipates as quickly as it forms

is it to the direction of the sea?
If it is, then it’s normal. It’s quite normal to find tropical cyclones in the sea.

Hurricanes are usually formed over warm water mass. When tropical depressions occurs, its energy become more intense as it moves along the ocean.
If the wind speed is under 74mph, it is not considered a hurricane. And even if it becomes a hurricane, hurricane on water is less deadly than a hurricane on land. There are no debris to pick up at sea, hence eliminating the possibility of items being dished out like flying bullets.

That’s a waterspout I think, no need for panic. Not the first time Singapore has seen one.
